Can I Jog With a Double Stroller

Working out keeps many people sane. It’s a great stress reliever and the benefits are many. Having kids, however, can change that a bit. It’s tough to find the time, the motivation, and the will to do it. And then, what do you do with the kids when you are ready to go? That’s where jogging strollers come in. Can I jog with a double stroller? Yes – but it should to be a jogging stroller.

Regular strollers, including double strollers, are not made for jogging. In fact, running with a regular stroller is not recommended due to safety concerns. The wheels are not sturdy enough and there is generally no suspension to protect baby from the bumps and rough patches while traveling at higher speeds.

That said, there are several strollers designed specifically for jogging that make sense to look at. We’ll cover the details of trying to jog with a regular stroller as well as look at whether jogging strollers are worth it and how to use them.

Can I Jog With a Double Stroller?

You can jog with a double stroller, but it isn’t recommended. Due to the suspension system, the tires, the lack of a fixed front wheel, and for the overall benefit of the baby and their comfort, it’s best not to jog with a regular stroller.

We’ll touch on a few key points relative to jogging with a double stroller (that isn’t made for jogging). The first being the wheels and physical properties of the stroller, the second looking at the safety concerns, and the third the effort required.

These points are all the same for a single stroller or double stroller.

Physical Properties of Strollers vs Jogging Strollers

There are clear differences between joggers and regular strollers that are important to highlight. Most notably, the wheels. Regular strollers have small, plastic wheels that work fine in malls and on concrete, but are not optimal at tackling many surfaces you encounter while jogging. Equally as important is the front wheel: jogging strollers have a fixed front wheel while regular strollers front wheels swivel.

Safety

The largest safety concern is a continuation of the thought above – the front wheel. Jogging strollers front wheel locks to provide maximum stability to the system while moving faster. This reduces wobble and stops the stroller from quickly turning to one side or the other; a scenario that can be dangerous for the child and the runner. In addition to this, there are several other general safety concerns with children in strollers that you should follow.

Jogging strollers have other features such as hand brakes, safety straps, and the larger, air-filled tires that reduce bumps and allow for the user to maintain better control. For these reasons, it’s much safer to jog with a jogger instead of a regular stroller.

Effort

Running isn’t easy. Add in 30lbs of kid and 30lbs of stroller that you now need to push as you run and it just gets harder. Since running with a stroller is harder anyway, we may as well look for an opportunity to make it as easy as possible. This is another reason it isn’t recommended to run with a regular stroller.

Every rock, twig, crack in the pavement, clump of dirt, or any foreign object and regular strollers stop abruptly, the wheels turn to the side, and the handle gets driven into your stomach. Who wants to deal with that?

While it may be fine for short trips, or very low speed runs, running with a regular stroller is not recommended for anyone doing any moderate to serious running.

Are Double Jogging Strollers Worth It?

Double jogging strollers are definitely worth it. For reasons of comfort, safety, and practicality, as well as economic, a jogging stroller is a great idea for an active parent that wants to stay connect with their child while still getting great exercise.

Let’s briefly discuss some of the pros and cons of a double jogging stroller:

Pros

As discussed above, they are safer, more reliable, generally better quality, and easier to jog with due to their intentional design to be a jogging stroller. This makes them a no-brainer for the serious athlete looking to get in a run with their baby in tow.

But what about your average parent?

Anyone who runs at all can benefit from a double jogging stroller. There are some drawbacks, which we’ll discuss next, but overall it’s a great option for most people.

Cons

A few cons of jogging strollers, and in particular double jogging strollers:

  • Price
  • Size and Portability

Price

Jogging strollers cost more than regular strollers. However, to help mitigate this, you can use a jogging stroller every day and there are actually many benefits to it. You only have to purchase one stroller which will help the budget.

Size and Portability

Jogging strollers are generally bigger, and double jogging strollers are much bigger. But, if you have two kids under the age of 5 or so, it might just be a necessary evil. That said, there are some things that can help reduce the size and weight.

Smaller, lighter, and less bulky double jogging strollers are made for exactly this reason. A narrow double jogging stroller can really help with more narrow doorways or being able to get it in and out of smaller cars.

Jogging strollers come in a variety of price ranges and quality levels to meet the budget demands of everyone. Some jogging strollers are completely decked out with Bluetooth speakers and are more comfortable that some houses. Some are much more modest, but still do a great job. How Do You Use a Double Jogging Stroller?

Using a double jogging stroller is pretty easy – you get it set up correctly with the proper incline, canopy position, and storage situation, throw the baby in (ok, gently place the baby in) and get running! There are only a few things you need to consider differently than a normal stroller.

For starters, one of the differences between joggers and regular strollers is the front wheel. Some jogging strollers have a fixed front wheel which doesn’t require any special consideration from a utilization standpoint. Others, however, have a swivel wheel that can be locked. These strollers will require you to manually lock the wheel prior to running. This is an important step to maximize stability and safety for the child.

The benefit to these types of strollers, however, is that they can be used in “swivel mode” when not jogging. This makes them much easier to move around and maneuver in tighter spaces than a fixed-wheel stroller will be able to. You can do the same with either one, but the swivel wheel will likely require less effort at times.

Conclusion

Double strollers are not meant for jogging or moving at high rates of speed. For all of the reasons outlined above, it is not recommended. Whenever we get asked can I jog with a double stroller, the answer is a resounding… maybe. If you are talking about a very slow jog or brisk walk in a park for 10 minutes per day, it probably isn’t the end of the world, but it’s going to be more frustrating for you.

If you’re training for a marathon, or heck even a 5k, it isn’t recommended at all. Do yourself a favor and get a double jogging stroller if you want to keep running as part of your life.
