Does Running Make You Shorter?

When the load fluctuates during the day as a result of different physical activities, the rate of disc degeneration also fluctuates. The study was conducted to discover if there is an association between long-distance running and an increase in the loss of vertebral column height.

Thirty elite male runners between the ages of 17 and 29 participated in this research. The heights of the subjects’ vertebral columns were measured in the morning upon awakening, in the afternoon before running 9 miles, and immediately after the run.

According to the results of paired t-tests:

  1. The height of the vertebral column was considerably lower after the run
  2. A significantly greater amount of height was lost during 1 hour of running than during 7.5 hours of comparatively static activities.


Can running on a treadmill increase height? Ultimately, it’s likely it helps a bit but not to a noticeable degree. There is no hard evidence or long-term studies that prove it one way or another, but the increase in HGH and bone density from running may lead to positive correlations to height in healthy people.
